Since July 2011 the MDI project has increased its focus on assisting to create communications for development (C4D) content on the NBC. This has included a few content development strategies: The Use Your Voice campaign, a partnership between AusAID and NBC radio, focused on Gender Based Violence (GBV) in PNG.

Over 12 weeks, the NBC produced more than 30 hours of radio programming on the topic, including interviews and talkback with GBV experts in PNG, and discussions with all levels of PNG society. The talkback programming included around 14 provinces in PNG. Nearly three-quarters of the callers were men, ringing in to say "it's time to stop violence against our women NOW".

With help from AusAID, the NBC made TV spots with Mal Meninga and Nathan Hindmarsh with the message "strong men don’t bash women”. As part of the Use Your Voice campaign, Digicel allowed the project to use their client base of more than 1.4 million mobile phone users, to send text messages that we can all use our voices to end violence against women in our communities.

The campaign received applications from people across the country with innovative ideas to communication the anti-GBV message; and the NBC has also been engaging with NGOs to produce various public service announcements around GBV.

From March 13-21, 2011 a small group of broadcasters from Battambang FM 92.70 travelled to Australia for a special study tour at ABC Melbourne and Ballarat. It was the first trip overseas for some, but the group experienced some Australian culture and cuisine and gained really valuable exposure and experience from ABC radio broadcasters and producers.

The group sat in on Mornings with Jon Faine at 774 Melbourne and participated in a special workshop with him, developing their skills and knowledge on how to produce and present an efficient and professional talkback program. A workshop with Triple J Producer Amelia Chappelow provided the Youth Voice team members with great advice and ideas to take back to Battambang for their new youth program.

The number of Ni-Vanuatu able to receive good quality radio signals is at its highest level in years. A survey of VBTC's recently restored short wave transmission system has found that its signal strength throughout the country is excellent. This is a huge improvment from 2007, when a survey found that radio coverage through the Vanuatu islands was “poor to non-existent”. No regular tests were conducted prior to 2007. With physical and financial limitations in shipping newspapers and broadcasting television to Vanuatu's many islands, radio is the only communication medium capable of reaching 100% of the population.

In June, journalists from FM 92.70 in Battambang, northwest Cambodia, participated in a workshop to set up a youth talkback program. A youth forum involving people from local universities and NGOs was held to develop program ideas and strategies to get young people in the community involved in the talkback program. It went to air on August 20, and has since been running weekly. FM 92.70 is run by the Public Information Service, under Cambodia’s Ministry of Information.

Back in Phnom Penh, Radio National Kampuchea’s newly formed Features Team began broadcasting in April 2010 after a six-week training program. The team is currently producing four weekly programs.

In other project news, a group of media management students began a two-month internship with RNK’s news and features departments in August. The students, from the Royal University of Phnom Penh’s Department of Media & Communications, are receiving training and gaining practical experience working alongside RNK journalists.
